Chocolate Factory – Boss-Play Escape – Oceanside, CA

  • **DISCLAIMER** (Click to Read)

BEFORE reading our Recommendations we would like you to read our disclaimer to understand what it is we are trying to relay to our players. We want you to understand how we choose recommendations based on our team’s experience with the venue. There are a number of factors that ruin a player’s experience in an Escape Room, and as Gamers & as Escape Room Designers ourselves we have a unique perspective on what a player’s experience should be like. We recommend games/venues based on our fair assessment of how a game/venue provides an experience to their players overall.

We are NOT a review website! Each venue posting is a recommendation for the game, we do not and will not post any negative comments for any of the games listed. Use the information we provide as a reference for you and your team to choose the experience that is right for you.

The opinions expressed on this website is based on the Unlockables Team’s experience in the specific venue/game and should not be the only reference you use to base your next experience with. Read other reviews and decide for yourself, some solid review websites who understand player experiences: Escape Authority and Escape Rumors

What we look for in an Escape Room: The Unlockables Team’s general idea of an Escape Room Experience is one that is Overall Fun. First and foremost the games MUST be fun in order for us to recommend it. Each venue has different strengths and weaknesses, we do not care about its difficulty rating, how fast we finish or how many hints we asked for. Our team we wants to be transported to the world each venue creates and how their puzzles and stories blend together.

“If you are NOT having fun, you’re doing it WRONG.”

*UNBL Difficulty Rating is based our our experience going through the game on how we felt how difficult it was at the time. Difficulty will vary from team to team. As your team’s experience in Escape Rooms gets greater, the easier some games will seem. As Escape Room designers, we can gauge difficulty and come up with a solid difficulty level to base off of. Please use as a reference point. Also note: Less difficult games are NOT bad, nor is Extremely difficult games a positive thing. Your intelligence is NOT a factor, your experience in Escape Rooms however IS a factor. The more acclimated you are in escape rooms the more certain concepts become easier to grasp and correlate.

**2-Playerable – A very commonly asked question. If a game “can be played with 2-Players.” This note is based on if the UNBL team played the game as a 2-player team and/or on a general assessment by the team that the game can be played with 2-Players. Some games have physical limitations which require more than 2 players to complete the task. Some games will allow 2-Players even if the minimum suggests more, usually a business tactic to maximize revenue. A 2-Player game is often discouraged by most Escape Rooms since a majority of venues will be designed with teamwork in-mind. Thus, making a 2-Player game more difficult due to the number of tasks that need to be accomplished in order to escape. Again, the more experienced you are in Escape Rooms, the easier it will be to play with less players.

***Experience Level – A common misconception of the Success Rate of an escape room is: “Intelligence over Experience.” This is only partially true. Intelligence does NOT matter in an escape room, some of the older escape games had basic problem solving puzzles (ie Math, sudoku and crosswords). But as the industry matured alot of rooms started moving away from old fashion paper puzzles to a more interactive style of play. There is still a large lateral and creative thinking mindset involved, but the basic problem solving puzzles are now physical and interactive. The better designers find creative ways to challenge their players. Which is why we base our “experience” level not by how intelligent you are, but by how many escape rooms you’ve played. Just like any hobby, those who spend more time invested in the hobby are more exposed to different varieties of puzzles. Making it easier to accomplish tasks because of “experience”.

OVERVIEW: It is EXACTLY what you think it is. The Chocolate factory is one of those games that combine great immersion, puzzle design and a very very good adaptation to the classic Gene Wilder film. (notice we said Gene Wilder NOT Johnny Depp LOL). There is so much immersive goodness in this game that it really feels like you are stepping into the factory and fulfilling your childhood dreams of playing in a candy haven. There is a very high amount of tech that is seamlessly integrated into the game, it is… pure imagination.
